Malbaie River Outfitters

Welcome to Malbaie River Outfitters

Malbaie River Lodge

We are located in the heart of SALMON COUNTRY with eight (8) different salmon rivers reached by an easy drive from our lodge. Each river offers it's own unique opportunities to pursue salmon. In June and early July three of the rivers are high enough so that guests can enjoy canoe runs. All of the rivers are clear enough to enable sight fishing to individual salmon.

Our experienced guides will ensure that all clients will have an enjoyable and memorable Atlantic Salmon fishing experience. Our highest priority is to provide world-class Atlantic Salmon fishing to our clients.

We can accommodate individual anglers as well groups of up to 14 depending upon the season. Malbaie River Outfitters has the perfect setting for coporate groups as well. Let us tailor a fishing package for your specific needs.  We invite you to experience world-class Atlantic Salmon fishing with Gaspe's most experienced Outfitter.

World-Class Atlantic Salmon Fishing

2008 Fishing Update

The always popular Beginner's Spey School with Simon Gawesworth is half full at this point.  The remaining 7 slots will fill up quickly.

Malbaie River Outfitters is the premier Atlantic Salmon lodge on Quebec's Gaspe peninsula with access to great water on 8 different Atlantic Salmon rivers.  The flexibility we offer our clients for their Atlantic Salmon fishing trip is unparalleled in Quebec. Our flexibility to fish several rivers in one trip and our access to prime Atlantic Salmon water is why our clients return each season.

We offer world-class fishing on 8 Gaspe salmon rivers from June through September.  Our seasoned guides and experienced staff will work to make your trip relaxing and memorable.

During the season we provide regular updates of the fishing and river conditions in our RIVER REPORTS.  Different rivers receive runs of fish at various time throughout the season and our guides know when and where to find them.

If you are considering a trip to Quebec it is important to use the services of an outfitter like Malbaie River Outfitters.  Quebec's Salmon Fishing regulations and the accessibility to quality water are extrememly complicated, and when you add the languauage barrier, planning a quality trip can be difficult at best.  The highest quality water is reserved water and the best way to access this water is through an outfitter.  We have access to great limited access and private water each and every day. Our English-speaking staff will make you feel right at home.

We are the only Gaspe outfitter with guaranteed prime water; we do not rely on draw water for our clients.

Malbaie River Outfitters is the only outfitter in Quebec to have access to 8 different Atlantic Salmon rivers.  Having access to several different rivers gives us a great deal of flexibility and we are able to provide  the best possible fishing to our clients throughout the season.  Each river gets a different run of salmon and we are able to catch bright salmon throughout the season.  The variety of rivers that we fish gives our clients an opportunity to experience different water during their stay, and with each river having its own unique characteristics, no two days are the same!

Malbaie River Outfitters features the most experienced guides on Gaspe's York, Dartmouth, St. Jean rivers, Grande, Pabos, and Malbaie Rivers.  Our  guides have an average of over 20 years of experience on these rivers.

We offer two Spey Schools each limited to 14 participants: our Beginner's Spey School is held June 1-6 and our Refresher Spey School is held June 7-12 for anglers who have some spey experience. Both Spey Schools combine instruction with fishing for large, fresh-run Atlantic Salmon. The spey casting instruction is done on the St. Jean River which is a perfect river for these schools.

Why choose an Outfitter

When considering a trip with an Outfitter or Wildlife Reserve in Quebec it is important to consider:

Whether the operation is limited to a certain stretch of a single river?

Do the clients have an opportunity to set their own fishing schedule?

Is the operation renowned for a quality Atlantic Salmon Fishing experience?

These are important considerations because they have a direct impact on one's fishing experience.

1) Being limited to a certain stretch of river has its drawbacks for a couple of reasons. First, if fishing conditions are poor there is no opportunity to explore other rivers. Secondly, rivers are dynamic organisms and change constantly, and this can have an impact on the quality of fishing. For example, some of the upper St. Jean River has filled in over the past few years and the result has been the loss of quite a bit of the prime fishing areas on this stretch of water. This used to be a great fishery but is not what it once was.

Similarly, the Dartmouth River is generally unproductive after early July and it is best to avoid this river for most of the season except after a rise in water.

Malbaie River Outfitters has a license which covers 8 different salmon rivers and that enables us to have maximum flexiblity. We are able to put clients on the most productive water during their stay.

2) Most operations limit the fishing time for their clients each day. Optimal fishing times vary day by day as well as seasonally and our staff works to make sure that our clients have the opportunity to be on the water during the optimal fishing times. Daily fishing schedules are customized to the desires of our clients and are not dictated by "camp rules".

3) Over the past 5 years Malbaie River Outfitters has been written up in dozens of publications and has been featured on numerous fly fishing programs. We strive to offer a quality Atlantic Salmon Fishing experience at a reasonable price. That is how we have built our reputation and that is what we will continue to do in the coming years.
